Restaurant and Facility Grease Trap Cleaning

Grease trap cleaning calls usually come from restaurants where the trap smells or drains slowly, or where it has only ever been pumped. Nursing homes, schools, hotels, and other properties with a commercial kitchen call for the same reasons, often with an inspection date or a maintenance file to think about as well. In both cases the visit ends with the hardened grease gone, a plain description of the trap's condition, and a sensible interval for the next visit.

For Restaurant Owners

If the kitchen smells of grease a week after the pump-out, or the floor drains and dish sinks stay slow even though the trap is on a regular schedule, the buildup inside the trap is the likely cause. Tell us whether the trap is an interior unit under the dish pit or an in-ground interceptor outside, roughly how big it is, and when it was last pumped. We pump it, scrape the hardened buildup off the walls, baffle faces, and pipe openings, and tell you what shape the trap is in. You get your capacity back, the odor source inside the trap removed, and a clear idea of how often the trap should be serviced for your volume.

For Facility and Property Managers

Nursing homes, schools, hotels, and multi-tenant buildings with a commercial kitchen have the same trap problems as a restaurant, plus a paper trail to maintain. We confirm access and the on-site contact ahead of time, work around the kitchen's schedule as far as we can, and keep the visit as short as a thorough cleaning allows. You receive a record of the service for your maintenance file, along with notes on anything we saw inside the trap that you should plan for. If you look after more than one kitchen, we can put all of them on one cleaning schedule.

Past the Pump-Out

What a Grease Trap Cleaning Includes

A pump-out empties the trap; a cleaning restores it. Once the contents are gone, a layer of hardened grease is still stuck to the walls, the baffles, and the inlet and outlet openings, and that layer is what cuts into capacity, slows the flow, and keeps the smell around. Cleaning removes it, which is why we clean every time we pump. Here is what a full grease trap cleaning covers and what to expect if the trap has gone a long time without one.

Pump-Out and Interior Scraping

The working part of every cleaning: the trap is pumped dry first, then every surface we can reach is scraped and brushed free of hardened grease.

How a Cleaning Goes

What Happens During a Grease Trap Cleaning

Because we clean every time we pump, a grease trap visit takes longer than a vacuum-only pump-out, so it helps to know what the visit involves and what we need from you before it starts. Most of your part happens up front: tell us about the trap, clear the way to it, and let us know when the kitchen can spare the space. From there, we handle the rest, and an underground trap stays in service while we work.

1

Call or send the form with the property address, the type of business, and whether the trap is inside the kitchen or buried outside the building. Tell us the size if you know it, when it was last pumped, and what prompted the call, whether that is odor, slow drains, an inspection letter, or a trap you have just taken over. We use that to quote the job and set a window the kitchen can live with.

2

On the day, we open the trap and pump out everything in it, from the grease cap on top to the solids on the bottom. Keep the area around an interior trap clear and vehicles off the cover of an exterior one, and this part goes quickly. An empty trap is the starting point; nothing can be scraped properly until it is.

3

With the trap empty, the hardened grease comes off the walls, both sides of the baffles, and the pipe openings by hand, with scrapers and brushes. This is the slow part of the visit and the part a vacuum hose cannot do, so it is also where the time and the value go. There is nothing you need to do during it beyond keeping staff clear of the open trap.

4

The loosened grease is rinsed down and vacuumed out so the trap surfaces are actually bare, and then we look over the baffles, walls, and fittings while everything is visible. If a baffle or tee is damaged, we can replace it ourselves; if the walls show wear, we tell you plainly what we saw and what it usually means. It is a quick look rather than a formal report, but it is usually how a worn baffle gets caught before it fails.

5

We put the cover back, clean up the work area, and go over what we found in everyday language. You get a record of the visit with the date and the work done, which belongs in your maintenance or compliance file. Before we leave, you will know how heavy the buildup was and when the next visit should fall.

Common Questions About Grease Trap Cleaning

These are the questions restaurant owners and facility managers ask most often before booking a grease trap cleaning, answered plainly. If your situation is not covered, call and describe what the trap is doing; it is usually a short conversation. Title 5 requires a grease trap to be pumped or cleaned at least once every 3 months and your local Board of Health enforces it; where an answer depends on your town, we say so.

General Questions

Pumping removes what is in the trap; cleaning also removes what is stuck to it. With 1620 Sanitation you get both on every visit: we vacuum out the floating grease, the water, and the settled solids, then scrape the hardened grease from the walls and both baffle faces, clear the inlet and outlet openings, rinse the loosened material out, and finish with a look at the trap's condition. Hydro jetting or pressure washing can be added when the buildup calls for it. If a company quotes you for cleaning and is in and out in the time a pump-out takes, ask what was scraped.

Scheduling and Compliance

Not sure whether the trap needs hydro jetting or pressure washing on top of the cleaning? Call and ask. We will tell you straight.
